Why choose Ford?

Ford is the UK's most popular car brand by volume, and with good reason - the range covers practically every need, from the Fiesta and Focus through to the Puma, Kuga, Mustang, and Ranger. Naturally, that means there are more used Fords available on finance than almost any other make. The problem is that dealer finance on a used Ford tends to be expensive. Ford Credit offers competitive rates on new models through its "Ford Options" PCP product, but those headline deals don't extend to used stock in the same way. Independent dealers selling used Fords commonly quote representative APRs of 14% to 17%, and even Ford main dealers charge noticeably more on approved used than on new. Through Prefinance, specialist brokers offer used Ford finance from 8.9% APR (representative 8.9% APR). On a car you're paying off over three or four years, the rate difference between 8.9% and 15% is substantial. Use our Ford finance calculator to see the exact saving on the model you're considering.
The Most Popular Used Fords on Finance
Ford's range is one of the broadest in the UK market. Here are the models that come up most frequently in used finance enquiries, and what's worth considering when financing each one.
Ford Fiesta
The Fiesta was the UK's best-selling car for over a decade before production ended in 2023, and the used market is flooded with examples at every price point. You can find clean, late-model Fiestas from around £9,000, with ST-Line and Vignale trims topping out at roughly £18,000. The sheer volume of used Fiestas means dealers aren't always fighting to offer their best rate - they know there's always another buyer behind you. That's exactly why comparing through Prefinance before accepting a forecourt quote can save you money you'd otherwise never know you were overpaying. Check the numbers on our Ford PCP rates calculator.
Ford Focus
The Focus remains one of the best family hatchbacks on the market, and used examples offer strong value. Prices range from around £10,000 for older models through to £25,000 for low-mileage ST and ST-Line X variants. The Focus holds its value reasonably well by mainstream standards, which keeps PCP monthly payments competitive. HP is a sensible alternative for Focus buyers who cover high annual mileage and want to avoid PCP's excess mileage charges.
Ford Puma
The Puma has become one of Ford's most popular models since its relaunch, and used examples are now widely available. Prices sit between £15,000 and £28,000, with the ST variant commanding a premium. The Puma's mild-hybrid powertrain appeals to cost-conscious buyers, and its strong residual values mean PCP works well - lenders set reasonably confident GFV figures, keeping your monthly payments in check. It's one of the models where comparing rates through Prefinance tends to produce noticeable savings, simply because the amounts borrowed are in the range where even a few percentage points of APR translate into a meaningful monthly difference.
Ford Kuga
Ford's mid-size SUV competes with the Nissan Qashqai and Volkswagen Tiguan, and used Kugas offer a lot of car for the money. Prices range from around £14,000 for early third-generation models to £32,000 for low-mileage PHEV ST-Line X variants. The plug-in hybrid version is particularly popular with company car drivers because of its low BIK tax band, and many of those are now filtering through to the used market at attractive prices. HP suits Kuga buyers who want to keep the car long-term, while PCP works for those who plan to trade up in a few years.
Ford Mustang
The Mustang is the outlier in the Ford range - a genuinely desirable performance car that sits in a different bracket from the rest of the lineup. Used prices for the 2.3 EcoBoost start from around £28,000, while V8 GT models range from £35,000 to £50,000 depending on age and spec. The Mustang holds its value better than most mainstream Fords, and it attracts buyers who are more likely to shop around for finance rather than accepting the first quote. If you're looking at a V8 GT at the upper end of the price range, our Ford finance calculator will show you exactly how much you can save by comparing rates.
Ford Ranger
The Ranger is the UK's most popular pick-up truck, and it's commonly financed by both private buyers and small businesses. Used prices range from around £18,000 to £40,000, with the Ranger Raptor at the top. Business buyers often prefer HP because it allows them to claim capital allowances on the full purchase price, while private buyers tend to favour PCP for the lower monthly cost. Either way, comparing rates is essential - dealer finance on commercial and crossover vehicles like the Ranger often carries higher APRs than you'd expect.
Why Dealer Finance on a Used Ford Is Often Expensive
There's a structural reason why used Ford finance from dealers tends to be pricier than on premium brands. Ford's new car finance arm, Ford Credit, offers subsidised rates on new models - sometimes 0% APR on selected stock. Those rates are manufacturer-supported and don't reflect the real cost of borrowing. When you move to used, that subsidy disappears. The dealer is now working with either Ford Credit's unsubsidised used rates or a third-party finance provider, and the representative APR jumps significantly - often to 14% or higher.
Independent dealers selling used Fords face the same issue but with less competitive finance panels. Many work with a single lender whose representative APR sits at 16% or 17%. The dealer earns commission on the finance, which is factored into the rate you're offered. None of this is hidden or improper - it's simply how the market works. But it means the rate the dealer quotes is rarely the best rate available to you.
This is where comparing through Prefinance changes the picture. We compare quotes from multiple specialist brokers, each with their own panel of lenders, so you see what the open market actually offers rather than what one dealer happens to quote.
PCP vs HP: Which Works Best for a Used Ford?
Most used Ford finance comes down to a choice between PCP and HP. Lease Purchase is rarely offered at the price points most Fords occupy, and it wouldn't make practical sense on the majority of models in the range.
PCP keeps your monthly payments lower by deferring a chunk of the car's value as a Guaranteed Future Value (GFV) balloon payment at the end. You're only paying off the depreciation plus interest, not the full price. At the end of the term, you can pay the balloon and keep the car, hand it back, or use any positive equity as a deposit on your next vehicle. PCP works well for Focus, Puma, and Kuga buyers who expect to change cars every three to four years and want the flexibility to do so without the hassle of selling privately.
HP spreads the full cost across your monthly payments with no balloon. You pay more each month, but the total interest is lower because there's no deferred balance accruing charges. Once the final payment is made, the car is yours. HP is the better choice for Fiesta buyers who plan to run the car until it's done, Ranger owners who cover high mileage and don't want PCP's mileage restrictions, and anyone who simply wants to own their car outright at the end.
The right product depends on your circumstances, but whichever you choose, the rate you pay matters just as much as the product itself. A PCP at 8.9% costs you less overall than an HP at 16% on the same car over the same term - even though HP is structurally the cheaper product. That's why comparing rates first is so important.
Why Comparing Ford Finance Saves More Than You'd Expect
On premium brands, the gap between dealer finance and what specialist brokers can offer might be two or three percentage points. On mainstream used cars like Fords, the gap is often much wider - six, eight, or even ten percentage points - because independent dealers selling lower-value stock tend to use finance providers with significantly higher representative APRs.
The absolute saving in pounds per month may be smaller than on a £60,000 BMW, but as a proportion of your monthly payment it's often more significant. If you're paying £220 a month for a used Puma and you could be paying £190 by comparing rates, that £30 a month is a 14% reduction in your outgoing. Over four years it's nearly £1,500 - real money that stays in your pocket rather than going to a lender as avoidable interest.
