Why choose Land Rover?

Land Rover occupies a unique position in the UK car market. No other brand inspires quite the same combination of loyalty, aspiration, and sheer practicality. The new Defender has become one of the most desirable SUVs on the road, the Discovery remains a genuine seven-seat workhorse, and the classic Defender - the original that started it all - has a thriving market of its own. Whatever corner of the Land Rover range appeals to you, the finance deal you secure will determine how much that car actually costs over the next few years. Dealer APRs on used Land Rovers average around 13.9%, and even Land Rover's own approved used programme charges more than many buyers realise. Through Prefinance, specialist brokers offer rates from 7.9% APR on vehicles over £40,000 and from 8.9% APR on those below (representative 8.9% APR). Our data across 124 real Land Rover comparisons shows an average saving of £64 per month compared to dealer finance. The Most Popular Used Land Rovers on Finance

Land Rover's range is broader than most people think, with different models attract very different buyers. Here's what you need to know when financing each one.

Land Rover Defender (New Generation)

The new Defender launched in 2020 and immediately became one of the most sought-after SUVs in the UK. Available in 3 versions: the shorter 90, the standard 110, and the longer 130, it blends genuine off-road ability with a level of on-road refinement the original never came close to offering. Used prices start from around £30,000 for higher-mileage 3 door early models and climb past £80,000 for the latest V8, X-Dynamic HSE, and low-mileage 130 examples. The Defender OCTA sits in a bracket of its own, commanding well over £150,000.

The Defender holds its value exceptionally well by mainstream SUV standards, which makes it a strong candidate for PCP - lenders are confident in setting competitive GFV figures because the residual demand is so consistent. For buyers who plan to keep theirs and use it properly - whether that means towing, greenlaning, or simply running it as a daily driver for years - HP delivers the lowest total interest cost. At these values, comparing rates through our Land Rover PCP rates calculator typically saves a meaningful amount each month compared to the dealer's quote.

Classic Defender (Pre-2016)

The original Land Rover Defender - produced from 1983 to 2016, though its roots stretch back to the 1948 Series I - occupies a completely different part of the market. These are no longer just working vehicles. Clean, low-mileage examples have appreciated significantly over the past decade, and the market for restored and modified Defenders is booming. Prices range from around £20,000 for honest, usable 90s and 110s through to well over £100,000 for concours restorations, Heritage Edition models, and specialist rebuilds from companies like Twisted and Arkonik.

Financing a classic Defender requires a lender who understands the vehicle's value - which isn't always reflected in standard trade guide pricing. Many mainstream lenders won't finance vehicles of this age, or will only do so at punitive rates. The specialist brokers on the Prefinance panel include providers who handle classic and modified vehicles regularly, which means you're more likely to get a competitive rate on a Defender that a high-street lender would turn away. HP is the most common product for classic Defenders, since PCP's GFV model doesn't work well on vehicles where the value is driven by condition, specification, and provenance rather than age and mileage alone.

Land Rover Discovery

The Discovery has been the practical choice in the Land Rover range since it first appeared in 1989. The current Discovery 5 is a genuine seven-seater with proper off-road capability, a refined interior, and enough boot space to swallow a family's worth of luggage without folding the third row. It's the Land Rover you buy when you need a car that actually does everything rather than just looking like it could.

Used Discovery 5 prices range from around £15,000 for early 2017-2018 models to £55,000+ for late-plate R-Dynamic HSE examples. The Discovery has historically depreciated faster than the Defender or Range Rover, which means PCP GFV figures can be set lower - resulting in slightly higher monthly payments than you might expect for a car at this price. On the other hand, that depreciation creates opportunities for used buyers getting into a car that cost £65,000 or more when new. HP is popular with Discovery owners who plan to keep the car for the long haul and want to minimise total interest.

Land Rover Discovery Sport

The Discovery Sport is Land Rover's entry point and its most affordable model. It competes with the BMW X3, Audi Q5, and Volvo XC60, offering five or seven seats in a more compact package than the full-size Discovery. Used prices range from around £10,000 for early models to £35,000 for recent facelifted examples in R-Dynamic SE trim.

At this price level, the Discovery Sport sits mostly below the £40,000 threshold, which means the starting rate through Prefinance is 8.9% APR rather than 7.9%. Even so, that's significantly lower than what many dealers quote on used Discovery Sports - independent dealers commonly charge 12% or more, and Land Rover approved used rates aren't always competitive either. The Discovery Sport is a popular PCP choice for families who change cars every three to four years, and HP suits those who want to own outright without worrying about mileage restrictions. Why Used Land Rover Finance Rates Vary So Much

Land Rover's position in the market creates an unusually wide spread of finance rates. At the manufacturer end, Land Rover Financial Services - part of JLR's partnership with lenders - offers PCP on new models at rates as low as 3.9% to 6.9% APR. But those are subsidised new-car rates. On used stock, the subsidy disappears and the APR jumps. Approved used rates through Land Rover retailers are typically 9.9% to 12.9%, and independent dealers selling used Land Rovers often charge 12% to 16% or more.

The variation exists because different finance sources work with different lender panels and take different margins. A single dealer or broker gives you a single rate from a single source. Prefinance compares quotes from multiple specialist brokers, each with access to their own panel of lenders. That competition is what drives the rate down. On a £50,000 Defender financed over 48 months, the difference between 7.9% and 12% APR amounts to thousands of pounds in additional interest at the higher rate.

PCP vs HP: Which Suits a Used Land Rover?

Both products work well across the Land Rover range, but the right choice depends on how you plan to use and exit the car.

PCP keeps monthly payments lower by deferring a portion of the car's value as a Guaranteed Future Value (GFV) balloon. At the end of the term, you can pay the balloon and keep the car, hand it back, or use any equity toward your next vehicle. PCP is the most popular option for Defender and Discovery Sport buyers who like to change cars every three to four years. The Defender's strong residual values support competitive PCP terms, while the Discovery Sport's affordability means PCP monthly payments are manageable for most budgets.

HP spreads the full cost across fixed monthly payments with no balloon at the end. You pay more each month, but the total interest is lower and the car is yours once the agreement finishes. HP is the natural choice for classic Defender buyers, Discovery owners who plan to keep the car long-term, and anyone who covers high annual mileage and wants to avoid PCP's excess mileage charges. It's also the preferred option for business owners who want to claim capital allowances on the full purchase price.

Whichever product you choose, the rate determines how much the finance actually costs. Comparing before you buy is the single most effective way to reduce that cost.
