Autotrader Car Finance: Is the Dealer's Rate Good?
Autotrader is by far the most-used car marketplace in the UK, and most listings on it show a finance rate somewhere on the page. It's easy to assume that rate has already been checked against the market. It hasn't. Autotrader shows you what the dealer's finance provider has set up for that specific car - it isn't comparing anything on your behalf.
That's worth knowing before you take a rate at face value. Paste the same listing URL into Prefinance and we'll compare it against the best available rate from our broker panel, free, in seconds. Either you find something cheaper, or you find out the dealer's rate was already good. Win win.
Autotrader Finance vs. Prefinance
Feature | Autotrader (Dealer-based) Finance | Prefinance |
|---|---|---|
What it shows | The dealer's own advertised rate for that car (or a Zuto rate if the dealer hasn't paid for Autotrader's finance module) | The dealer's rate compared against the best available rate from our broker panel |
Compares rates? | No - it's a single quoted rate, not a comparison | Yes - checks the dealer's rate against multiple panel brokers |
If no rate is advertised | Listing shows no rate at all | We can usually still offer a panel rate, though there's nothing to compare it against |
Savings shown | Not applicable | Both an interest saving and a monthly payment saving, when there's a saving to show |
Previous searches | No saved rates | You can view all your previous calculations |
How you start | Browse listings on the site | Paste the same listing URL, or enter a reg, make and model |
Is Autotrader comparing my finance rate for me?
No. The rate shown on an Autotrader listing is whatever the dealer's own finance provider has agreed for that car, not a market comparison. If the dealer pays for Autotrader's finance module, their rate shows on the page. If they don't, one of two things happens: no rate shows at all, or the listing shows a rate from Zuto instead, which tends to be higher - Zuto's own site currently quotes 18.1%. Either way, what you're looking at is one offer, not a comparison.
Can I ask the dealer to match a lower rate?
Not usually, no. Once a rate is advertised against a specific car, it's fixed to that finance product, and a salesperson can't discount it on the spot. If the listing says 11.9% APR on that car, it stays 11.9% on that car. The only way to actually get a different number is a different finance provider, which is exactly what comparing against a broker panel does.
Does every car from the same dealer get the same rate?
No, and this catches people out. Many dealers run a headline rate on some cars, not their whole forecourt, so the rate you saw advertised on one model doesn't necessarily apply to the specific car you're actually looking at. Always check the rate on the individual listing you're interested in, not the rate you remember seeing on a different car from the same dealer.
What if the listing doesn't show a rate at all?
Some dealers don't advertise an APR on Autotrader at all. When that happens, we can usually still offer a rate from our own panel, but we can't show it as a saving, because there's nothing on the dealer's side to compare it against. You'll see our rate on its own merits rather than as a head-to-head comparison.
What if the dealer's rate is already good?
Then you'll know that, and you can go ahead with confidence instead of wondering. Rates on our panel currently start from 8.1% APR, though they do move from time to time, so the exact representative APR you're shown will reflect the panel and lender that fits your circumstances at the time you run the comparison. If that doesn't beat what the dealer's already offering, nothing's been lost - you've just confirmed the dealer's rate was a fair one.
What to check before you apply
Check the rate on the specific listing you're interested in - don't assume it matches a rate you saw on a different car from the same dealer.
If the listing shows no rate, or a Zuto rate, paste the URL into Prefinance anyway and see what our panel can offer.
Remember an advertised dealer rate on a specific car is fixed - it won't move if you ask, so a broker comparison is the only way to actually find a different number.
Read the full representative APR and example for whichever broker we match you with before you apply - our panel figures move over time, so check the current one, not this article.
If our panel can't beat the dealer's rate, take that as confirmation, not a wasted check.
Autotrader tells you what one dealer's finance provider is offering. It's a good place to start, not the end of the search. Pasting the listing URL into Prefinance takes the guesswork out of whether that number was ever worth comparing - either you save money, or you find out you didn't need to.
