BMW X3 Finance, APRs, & Monthly Payments Explained
Financing an X3? Then it's worth putting the dealer's finance quote up against a genuine alternative.
Prefinance runs that comparison for you: we take the dealer's own finance example for the exact X3 you're looking at and compare it against the best available rate from our specialist panel of finance brokers for that type of vehicle. On average, that turns up savings of up to 30% against dealer finance, though that's an average across many deals, not a promise for yours, and some dealer X3 finance can be competitively priced.

What's the difference between PCP and HP on an X3?
Both are hire purchase agreements in the legal sense. The car isn't yours until the final payment clears, but they split the cost differently. HP spreads the full price, minus your deposit, evenly across the term, so every payment builds toward ownership; that's exactly why the HP quote above on the 2019 xDrive20d comes out higher per month than its own PCP quote on the identical car. PCP defers a chunk of the price to a Guaranteed (Minimum) Future Value at the end, keeping the monthly payment down; you can then pay it to keep the car, hand it back, or roll it into your next one.
One assumption underpins the instant comparison either way: Prefinance assumes the new lender's GFV matches the dealer's own. If your matched broker structures it differently, your real monthly payment could come out higher or lower than the illustrative figure.
How does Prefinance calculate your savings?
Point us at the car — a registration number works, so does a make and model, or paste in a link from a dealer site or somewhere like Autotrader, provided that listing shows a finance example. We take the dealer's own quote and set it against the strongest rate our specialist broker panel has for that class of vehicle. That comparison assumes you'd land the panel's best rate, which comes down to your own credit standing, and that the dealer selling the car is FCA authorised. Every comparison you run stays saved to your account, so no need to redo one later.
Representative APR is the rate at least 51 in every 100 customers a lender approves actually receive, or better; a regulatory yardstick rather than a headline number chosen to look good. What you'd personally save comes down to your own choice of car and circumstances. Commission plays a part as well: both dealers and brokers get paid for putting finance together, which is a genuine reason two near-identical X3s can carry different rates at different dealers; and that gap is largely what our comparison brings into the open.
What actually shifts the rate you're offered?
Credit score does most of the work, but the size of your deposit and term length both move the number too, as the table shows — the two 2023 20d M Sport rows make that obvious, with an extra £1,855 of deposit trimming over £46 off the monthly payment on an identical car, and the two M40d rows show a longer term bringing the monthly figure down at the cost of more total interest. One thing worth keeping in mind: dealers and brokers both earn commission for arranging finance, which helps explain why two nearly identical X3s can be priced differently at different dealerships, and surfacing that gap is a large part of the point of running a comparison.
As a rough guide: a flat rate of 5% on £30,000 over four years works out to around £1,500 a year in interest. And as a quick rule of thumb, APR tends to sit close to double the flat rate, so a 5% flat rate typically shows up as something like 9.8–9.9% APR.
Worth checking before you apply
Make sure the deposit and mileage in your comparison match what the dealer's actually quoting — the deposit's editable, but get anything else wrong and the result skews.
If comparing PCP against HP on the same car, look at both the monthly payment and whether you actually want to own the car outright at the end — the difference can be substantial, as the table shows.
If you're weighing up different terms or deposit levels on the same car, look at the total interest over the whole agreement, not just which monthly figure looks smallest.
Read the broker's full representative example before signing anything — it holds the real figures for your deal, not the illustrative ones shown here.
None of this tells you upfront whether the dealer's X3 quote in front of you is already a fair one, as sometimes it is. Running the comparison on your specific car is the only way to know for certain of potential savings through Prefinance.
