The Main Car Finance Options in the UK
When it comes to financing a car in the UK, three options typically stand out: Personal Contract Purchase (PCP), Hire Purchase (HP), and Lease Purchase. Each has distinct features designed to suit different needs and preferences. While they all involve making monthly payments, the ownership structure, flexibility at the end of the agreement, and overall cost vary significantly.
Personal Contract Purchase (PCP)
PCP is a popular choice for many drivers who like the idea of lower monthly payments and flexibility at the end of their term. With PCP, you don't pay off the entire value of the car during the agreement. Instead, your monthly payments cover the depreciation of the car over the contract period, plus interest. A significant portion of the car's value is deferred to the end of the agreement as an optional final payment, often called a Guaranteed Minimum Future Value (GMFV) or balloon payment.
On a used car based on 10,000 miles per annum, this is typically around 35% of the vehicle price on a 4 year agreement, but will vary according to the make, model, age and current mileage. As an example. If you're looking at a Porsche Taycan, the GMFV will be a lower percentage than a 911. Or a Mercedes-Benz EQC will ever a lower percentage than an AMG GT. It will even vary between lenders.
This is why we use a number of brokers to compare prices, as this givers you the best chance of finding the right finance for you. More lenders= more choice = better deals (usually!)
Back to PCP.
At the end of a PCP agreement, you typically have three choices:
Return the car: Provided you’ve kept within the agreed mileage and condition terms, you can simply hand the car back and walk away with nothing further to pay. Note: If your car has damage, the finance company will do a physical condition report and charge you for excess wear and tear or damage to the vehicle. They'll use a guideline set by the BVRLA (British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association) which takes into account the age and mileage of the vehicle. The newer the car and the lower the mileage, the stricter the criteria. Usually it's pretty fair, but some inspectors are more vigilant than others. It's a good idea to tidy up any obvious damage before you ask for the vehicle to be collected or hand it back, as you'll pay less.
Buy the car: You can pay the optional final payment (GMFV) and take full ownership of the vehicle. You can pay cash if you are lucky enough to have it sitting around, refinance the GMFV with the lender or another lender or bank.
Part-exchange the car: You can use any equity in the car (if its market value is higher than the GMFV) towards a deposit on a new finance agreement. You can also do this before the end of the agreement. Most dealers will; start to contact you as you get past the two year mark in an agreement to see if you want to change.
PCP can be an excellent option if you enjoy changing your car every few years and prefer lower monthly outgoings. However, it's important to be mindful of mileage limits, as exceeding them can lead to charges if you choose to return the car. Hire Purchase (HP)
Hire Purchase is a more straightforward finance product where you effectively hire the car for a set period, making regular monthly payments, with the intention of owning it at the end. Unlike PCP, there’s no large balloon payment at the end of the term. Once you’ve made all the agreed monthly payments and paid a small 'option to purchase' fee, the car is legally yours.
HP agreements typically involve a deposit, followed by fixed monthly payments over a term that usually ranges from 2 to 5 or even 6 years. You can even get 10 year terms on bigger assets like Motorhomes or Camper Vans. Because you're paying off the entire value of the car (minus your deposit) over the term, monthly payments are often higher than with PCP for a similar car and term. However, you gain outright ownership at the end, which appeals to many drivers who prefer not to have a lump sum payment looming.
HP is a good choice if you know you want to own the car at the end of the agreement and prefer predictable, fixed payments. It's also often suitable for those who don't want to worry about mileage restrictions or the car's future value.

Lease Purchase
Lease Purchase is a less common but still viable option, particularly for higher-value vehicles or business users, though it's also available for personal finance for HNW individuals It shares similarities with both PCP and HP. Like PCP, it features a balloon payment at the end of the agreement, which helps to keep monthly payments lower. However, unlike PCP, there is no option to simply hand the car back at the end of a Lease Purchase agreement; you are committed to paying the balloon payment to take ownership.
This means that with Lease Purchase, you are effectively agreeing to buy the car at the end of the term. The benefit is the lower monthly payments during the agreement, but you must be confident you can either pay the final balloon payment or refinance it. It’s important to understand this commitment upfront. A large proportion of high-end vehicles (£100k plus) are funded this way
Comparing Your Car Finance Options
To help you visualise the differences between these popular car finance products, here's a comparison table outlining their key features:
Feature | Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) | Hire Purchase (HP) | Lease Purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
Ownership at End | Optional (pay balloon, return, or part-exchange) | Yes (after all payments & option to purchase fee) | Yes (after paying mandatory balloon payment) |
Monthly Payments | Generally lower (paying depreciation + interest) | Generally higher (paying full car value + interest) | Generally lowest (paying depreciation + interest, with mandatory balloon) but not available to everyone |
Final Payment | Optional Guaranteed Minimum Future Value (GMFV) | Small 'Option to Purchase' fee | Mandatory balloon payment- not a guaranteed value |
Mileage Limits | Yes, typically with excess mileage charges | No | No (but impacts car's value for balloon payment) |
Flexibility | High (return, buy, or part-exchange) | Low (aimed at ownership) | Moderate (must buy, but lower monthly payments) |
Suitability | Regularly changing cars, lower monthly costs | Owning the car outright, fixed payments | Lower monthly payments with intent to own or change, often for higher-value cars |

Choosing the Right Car Finance for You
The "best" car finance option isn't universal; it depends entirely on your personal circumstances, driving habits, and future plans. Here are some questions to consider:
Do you want to own the car at the end of the agreement? If outright ownership is your goal, HP might be more suitable. If you prefer flexibility, PCP could be better.
How important are low monthly payments? PCP and Lease Purchase typically offer lower monthly outgoings compared to HP for a similar vehicle.
How many miles do you drive each year? If you cover a lot of miles, HP or Lease Purchase might be preferable to avoid excess mileage charges associated with PCP.
How often do you like to change your car? PCP is often favoured by those who like to upgrade their vehicle every few years.
Do you have a deposit? While not always mandatory, a deposit can reduce your monthly payments across all finance types. Read our guide on How Much Deposit Should I Put Down for Car Finance?
It’s also worth considering whether you’re looking for used car finance or a deal on a brand new model. The principles remain the same, but the specific offers might differ.
